May this be a year full, rich, and saturated with goodness to others and ourselves.  May G-d give us the strength to soar and reach high.  May we be privileged to set high goals, to reach them, and to help others reach theirs.  L’Shana Tova Tikateivu  – for all of the Nation of Israel and the nations of the world.

PORTRAITURE

The portrait is one of the most curious art forms. It demands special qualities in the artist, and an almost total kinship with the model.

We are often reminded, in the busy rush of our overfilled days, to stop, take a moment, and appreciate our lives and loved ones.  In fact, as hard as this is to do, each moment in time we preserve is a landmark to visit in the future.  This is what photography is about, creating a visual map of landmarks to visit in the history of humankind.
Images Through Time portrait photography  seeks to create a collaborative visual history through the interactive experience between subject and artist.  A portrait session works to synthesize environment, light, and the personality of each subject with the vision and creative voice of the photographer.  When you come before my camera, there is no need to have a special event, other than the desire to preserve this moment in your personal history.  Together, we will bring out the color, the detail, the essence-of you, at this timeless moment.

Tisha B’Av – the ninth day of the month of Av is commemorated in the Jewish calendar year as a day of intense mourning. Though our temple is not rebuilt yet, we, of this generation have the privilege to live in or visit the city of Jerusalem. Jerusalem is being rebuilt everywhere.

This collection includes photos of Yemin Moshe, the first neighborhood to be built outside of the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem. The very existence of this neighborhood is a testament to the courageous fervor of the Jewish people to walk the path of change and growth. It has been the great honor of the Jewish people throughout time to create a blend of the old and the new–in our many spheres; learning and halacha, art and architecture, creation and preservation. The City of Jerusalem, New and Old, is the center of the Jewish people. Today, out of the ashes of destruction, we thank God that we can walk the many twisting paths, the steps up and down and freely admire the growth around us. May we all experience peace and tranquility in our land.

From Destruction to Construction.

Tisha B’Av – the ninth day of the month of Av is commemorated in the Jewish calendar year as a day of intense mourning.  We remember days and periods of tragedy that befell our nation beginning with the destruction of both Temples in Jerusalem – not only for the sake of memories, but as a springboard to grow and become better people.  One of the traditional historic sites that Jews go to hear the reading of the Scroll of Eicha is Herodion: King Herod’s palace-fortress.

12 km south of Jerusalem, on a hill shaped like a truncated cone that rises 758 m. above sea level, stood Herodium.  It has a breathtaking view, overlooking the Judean Desert to the east, and the Judean Hills to the west.  Herodion was one of the last three fortresses held by Jewish fighters after the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 CE.  We are told that the Jews could see the flames of the Temple as it was being destroyed from the hilltop of Herodion.  It is therefore a popular and poignant location for the opening prayers of Tisha B’av as we commemorate that tragic day in Jewish history.

Make the time to see the land…

The Yatir Reservoir

The Yatir Reservoir The Yatir Reservoir The Yatir Reservoir

Yatir Forest is a forest in Israel, located on the southern slopes of Mount Hebron, on the edge of the Negev Desert. The forest covers an area of 30,000 dunams, and is the largest planted forest in Israel.

The first trees of the forest were planted in 1964 by the JNF, which continues to expand it . It is named after the ancient Levite city within its territory, Yatir, as written : “And unto the children of Aaron the priest they gave Hebron with its suburbs, the city of refuge for the manslayer, and Libnah with its suburbs, and Jattir with its suburbs, and Eshtemoa with its suburbs” (Joshua 21:13)

The forest is composed of more than four million trees. It also includes many broad leafed trees (such as Atlantic Terebinth, Tamarisk, Jujube, and Carob), Olive, Fig, Eucalyptus and Acacia, vineyards and various shrubs. Pictured above is the Yatir reservoir where water draining from Nahal Yatir, enters a small drainage basin in the semiarid southern Hebron Mountains.

Whether you go as a photographer, always on the lookout for beauty to capture, a tourist to see the land, or a citizen of this beautiful country just wanting to explore and discover the various hidden trails and terrains covering the expanse of the land, take a drive to this peaceful spot and enjoy the scenery and solitude.

The principle is competing against yourself. It’s about self-improvement, about being better than you were the day before.

As Tel Aviv continues its yearlong celebrations honoring its 100th year we too can take a peek at just a small sampling of the many faces we could happen upon.  Strolling through the Carmel Shuk (market), the seaside at sunset, or even just a simple parking lot with a kindhearted attendant, we get a glimpse of the makeup of the city. Beyond the interaction of the human face of Tel Aviv – we can experience many other faces as well.  Celebrate with Tel Aviv and taste a bit of her color.
